17 Mile Drive by TinkerM
Along the famous 17 mile drive in Monterey California you will find the most photographed tree in the world. The California Coast Cypress which can with stand winds levels up to 200 miles per hour. No one knows for sure how old this tree is. You will see it in many movies. Clint Eastwood resides a few miles south where he fell in love with the area while filming one of his first directed movies "Play Misty For Me". The 17 mile Drive has been one of the largest attractions to the area for tourist from all over the world. On any day you will see hundreds of people with cameras pull over to take a photo of this wind blown old Cypress a top a rocky cliff where you were at one time able to walk out and stand under. The coast however has become way to dangerous due to erosion and has been blocked off to protect not only viewers but the loss of habitation and further erosion. The grey whale can be seen in November travelling South to Mexican waters to birth, and homebound early spring back to Alaska with its new born. This journey is exhausting for the females as they have not fed and travel through treacherous waters in the Monterey Bay and San Fransisco Bay areas where , Killer Sharks await the Unfortunate ones to weak or just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The numbers of Grey Whales were on the decline in the later part of last century, but are again on the rise. Attractions also include, Seal Rock where hundreds of Bay Seals bask during the day. Several miles are hidden today by large solid fencing to protect and keep the Seals anxiety level down as hundreds of new pups are born each year.. Bird Rock where thousands of Sea Gulls and Pelican perch. Many tourist comment on the the white colour of the huge rock. The colour is not a colour at all, it is actually bird droppings which are 10 to 20 inches in some areas rock hard. The California Coast is aptly named the "Rugged Coast" as there are many large rock formations, cold temperatures and high winds. But there is nothing quiet like it , just ask Clint.
