Introducing project “Military Insignia”, featuring top quality military heraldry designs. Here you will find designer apparel, accessories, custom postage and gifts decorated with insignia of the 42nd Infantry Division, also known as “Rainbow Division". It is a division of the National Guard and United States Army. The 42nd Infantry Division has served in World War I, World War II and the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). The division is currently headquartered at the Glenmore Armoury in Troy, New York with the New York National Guard.
The 42ID adopted a shoulder patch and unit crests acknowledging the nickname. A popular myth persists that the 42ID patch symbolises half a rainbow, memorialising the half of the 42ID soldiers which became casualties during combat in World War I. However, this is not correct as contemporary photographs of the division during the First World War clearly show soldiers (to include division commanders) wearing half a rainbow as their shoulder sleeve insignia.
