Nicholas Shepherd was not a law clerk in Lincoln's office.
Nicholas Shepherd was a daguerreotypist in Springfield. Shepherd's roommate, Gibson William Harris, was a law clerk in Lincoln's office. It was Harris who identified the daguerreotype as the work of his friend Shepherd.
