Its local name is Sage Tāžī or Tāžī Spai. Other alternate names for this breed are Kuchi Hound, Tāzī, Balkh Hound, Baluchi Hound, Barutzy Hound,Shalgar Hound, Kabul Hound, Galanday Hound, or sometimes incorrectly African Hound.
