Ah Chee Lo (Native American Child) Postcards by j_krasner
Look at her luminous eyes! And she has such a serious face. Photographer Edward S. Curtis created this wonderful portrait around the year 1905. It is regrettable that he did not indicate Ah Chee Lo’s tribal affiliation. However, those of you who are familiar with the Edward S. Curtis Collection on the Library of Congress website will notice that Ah Chee Lo is identical to the child in Curtis’ portrait titled, “A Taos Girl.” Only the blanket she is wearing is different. Ah Chee Lo may indeed have been a Taos Indian, member the pueblo tribe in New Mexico. According to Taos Indian legend, an eagle led their ancestors to the Taos Valley. Archaeologists say these ancestors lived in this valley long before Columbus discovered America and hundreds of years before Europe emerged from the Dark Ages. Ancient ruins in the Taos Valley indicate their people lived there nearly 1,000 years ago.
