The drawing employs a double image (or visual pun) in which the scene of a woman admiring herself in a mirror, when viewed from a distance, appears to be a human skull. The first reaction that "it's a skull" is natural. Most folks never pick up the details until they get a bit closer. The actual image, of course, being of an attractive woman at her make-up table. It's a striking illusion and we'll let you render your own meaning from it. Skull symbolism is the attachment of symbolic meaning to the skull, generally human. The most common symbolic use of the skull is as a representation of death and mortality.
