Alphonse Mucha - Sarah Bernhardt Posters 1894,1896 Post Cards

In 1894 Alphonse Maria Mucha prepared a lithographed poster for the play Gismonda (by Victorien Sardou) to be performed at the Théâtre de la Renaissance and starring the then most famous actress in Paris; Sarah Bernhardt. When it appeared in Paris on the 1st January 1895, it literally made Mucha an overnight success. The actress was herself so impressed that she signed a six year contract with Mucha. La Dame aux Camélias (The Lady of the Camellias) was another of these posters created in 1896.
