The flag of Azerbaijan was officially adopted on February 5, 1991. It is based on an earlier flag used by the short-lived Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918-1920). It features three equal horizontal bands of blue, red, and green. A crescent and eight-pointed star, Turkish symbols, are centred in the red band which represents progress. The country had a long alliance with Turkey, and the blue colour has long been associated with the Turkic peoples. Green symbolises Islam.
