The killing of the mothers is what has happened to cause these babies to be orphans as well, lau.
It's tragic, and the illegal pet trade is a sad affair. They are adorable and intelligent, but they are not children. They are meant to be wild.

The little red basket he is in is the sleeping nest that provides security for these orphans. The movie trailers for IMAX's "Born To Be Wild" shows some of Alfred' pals in their sleeping baskets, too.

So sad there are so many orphans. Why is that? In SA we have wild life orphans because the parents have been shot. Very very sad.

You're not too far away from Borneo-- hope to see you (or maybe we already have/) at the OFI Care Center. There's a wonderful "kindergarten" playground area built by the Australian Project !!

You are so right, Bruce. It is incredible.
These little orphans steal one's heart. They are so gentle and peaceful, and even more amazing is how good orangutans smell. That red hair smells like cedar.

Alfred is wonderful, isn't he. That is his little diapered bottom that is sticking in the air in the chaos-in-the-nursery photo, too. I have no doubts that he will have graduated on to a bigger boys and girls area ahead of some of the other orphans when i get back to the Care Center!! Stay tuned...
