Battle Hymn. Retro Tie. Vintage Poster for Federal Theatre Project presentation of 'Battle Hymn' at the Experimental Theatre, east of Broadway. Poster shows a silhouette image of John Brown. 'Battle Hymn' was a play about John Brown of Harpers Ferry and was written by Michael Blankfort and Michael Gold. John Brown has been called 'the most controversial of all 19th-century Americans'. He practiced and advocated armed insurrection as a means to end all slavery and played a major part in starting the Civil War. He made his name in the unsuccessful raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859.
