The most common definition of a "bear" is a man who is hairy, has facial hair, and a cuddly body. However, the word "Bear" means many things to different people, even within the bear movement. Many men who do not have one or all of these characteristics define themselves as bears, making the term a very loose one. Suffice it to say, "bear" is often defined as more of an attitude than anything else - a sense of comfort with our natural masculinity and bodies that is not slavish to the vogues of male attractiveness that is so common in gay circles and the culture at large. "Chub" Gay slang for an obese person. It's usually only used by gay men when referring to other gay men. A chub is an overweight or heavy set to obese homosexual man who May or may not be a bear (Chubby bear is a common term ) and identifies himself as being part of the related chubby culture. Although there is some overlap between chubs and bears, chubs have their own distinct subculture and community. There are bars, organisations and social events specifically catering to this subculture, which allows members of the community to socialise with each other and develop social networks. Girth & Mirth is a widespread name for clubs of big men and their admirers. In the last several years, large regional social events have developed. They often feature pageants much like beauty pageants but more sexual in attitude in which titles are given to winners, like "Mr. Chubby International" and "Mr. Chaser International". In the United States, there is an annual national event, Convergence, as well as several annual regional gatherings. There is also an annual event in Europe called European Big Men's Convergence. These events are held in different cities each year and are usually hosted by that city's local big men's organisation.
