Blooming Plum Tree and Moon by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 1858). The flowering Plum has much symbolism in Japan and its scent is very popular. The Plum is the 1st flower seen in Spring with snow still on the ground when other plants are dormant. Young shoots and flowers last for just a short time at the start of Spring but the trees grow old and gnarled over many years. The contrast thus symbolises both longevity and new Hope (similar to a Phoenix). The full moon symbolises wholeness & strength.
