Monarch or Wanderer Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) resting in the warm sunlight. Feed on the Swan plant as caterpillars, very striking yellow, black and white. Travel enormous distances around the world. Arrived in New Zealand around the nineteenth century (probably along with the swan plant).
Ingest and store poisons from the plant for protection later in life, hence the bright and beautiful colouring.
