A Yorkshire Dales greetings card featuring a landscape photo of Ingleborough (one of the "3 Peaks of Yorkshire"), from the extensive limestone pavement on White Scars, in the Yorkshire Dales.
The "clints and grykes" as they are known, are created by the widening of weaknesses in the limestone, which is very soluble, by water and frost.
The clints are the blocks of limestone, the grykes being the cracks in between.
You need to take care walking on the pavement; some of the cracks are several feet deep and sometimes too wide to step across comfortably. In addition, some of the blocks rock when you step on them. They can also be very slippery when wet, and in winter can be treacherous.
