Liberty Bridge by night Post Cards
Szabadság híd (Liberty Bridge) by night, Budapest, Hungary The Liberty Bridge was the third Danube bridge in Budapest. Originaly it was named Franz Joseph bridge. The bridge is 333 metres long and 20 metres wide. The bridge was built between 1894 and 1896. The last - made of silver - rivet was inserted by the emperor Franz Joseph. (It wasn't a difficult job: the emperor hit the button and the steam machine placed the rivet.) Shortly after that, the rivet disappeared. Later it was replaced. The replaced part was covered by protective glass. (Today visitors can only find the protective glass because the replacement rivet also desappeared.) In 1945, during the WWII the Nazis destroyed all Danube bridges of Budapest. The bridge was reconstructed and renamed Liberty Bridge.
