This is an adaptation of Henri Rousseau's 1909 painting "Mandrill in the Jungle." The original artwork is a small oil on canvas,19 x 24 cm (about 7.5"x9.5"), and it is in a private collection.

Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) was an important French Post-Impressionist painter in the Naive or Primitive manner. He was self-taught and often painted from his imagination. His paintings of exotic jungle scenes are some of his most famous paintings. Interestingly enough, he never left France. He said that all that he learned came from nature. ~ During most of his lifetime, his paintings were laughed at and not considered "serious art." Towards the end of his life, Pablo Picasso saw Rousseau's artwork on a Paris street being sold as a canvas to be painted over. Picasso immediately recognised the artist's genius, went to meet the artist, and then held a half serious, half burlesque banquet in Rousseau's honour. Today Rousseau's paintings are known worldwide and he is embraced as one of history's famous artists.
