The Statue of Liberty, New York's famous landmark, was a gift from France to celebrate 100 years of the USA independence. The statue was designed by sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and the inner steel structure was designed by engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower. The statue is 46m high, plus the 47m-high pedestal. The inner structure weighs 125 tons and the copper sheets that cover the statue weigh 31 tons. In 1984, the United Nations designated the Statue of Liberty as a World Heritage Site. Liberty Island, where the statue is, and Ellis Island, a former inspection centre for approximately 12 million immigrants, form today the Statue of Liberty National Monument, in the entrance of New York Harbour.
