Orangutans are nature's original tree hugger since these gentle great apes live and play in the rainforest canopy of Southeast Asia. Here, a juvenile plays a game of peek a boo behind giant stilt roots which develop as a way to anchor to the thin top soil of equatorial rainforest on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.
Orangutans are the only great ape (sometimes mistakenly referred to as monkeys) surviving in the wild outside of the African continent. The word orangutan means "people of the forest."
