On July 13, 1787, the United States in Congress Assembled developed the Northwest Ordinance, an official document establishing the precedent by which the United States would expand westward across North America; that is, by the admission of new states rather than by the expansion of existing states. Therein, Article 3 exhibits one of many historical instances whereby government recognised the fundamental importance of religion in public life. This ordinance was affirmed by the US Congress On August 7, 1789.
