Steel Derrick Poster
This image is of a steel derrick located at Drake's Well Museum in Oil Creek State Park in Titusville, Pennsylvania. For those unfamiliar with the story, the first oil well was dug in Titusville where Edwin Drake struck black gold on August 27, 1859--thus beginning the age of oil for mankind. For better or worse, the location has great historical significance, although visiting the site gives no indication of this importance. There is an eerie quiet at Drake's Well that belies the great significance that oil has achieved in our daily lives. Walking around and gazing at the rusting components of old pumping machines, oxidised derricks and disintegrating drilling equipment, I can't help but smile at the fact that nature has reclaimed the area. To me, it serves as a reminder that no man's creation is everlasting. And indeed, sometime in the future, our empire of oil will come crashing down when the steel derricks of today, as those before, have run dry.
