By resolution of the Second Continental Congress on November 10, 1775 – celebrated as the date of the U.S. Marine Corps birthday - at Tun Tavern, Philadelphia, Captain Samuel Nichols formed the first two battalions of Continental Marines. The U.S. Marine Corps have since served with honour and distinction in every American armed conflict.
