Oil on canvas from 1889, Starry Night was painted while Van Gogh was in the asylum at Saint-Remy, France, and is considered one of his greatest masterpieces. Although it is a night scene, it was painted during the day and represents the view from the window in Van Gogh's sanitorium bedroom.
From the swirling clouds, crescent moon and glowing stars to the church steeple in the town below and large cypress tree in the foreground, Starry Night fills the eyes with an amazing contrast of movement and energy as a small pastoral township sleeps below a mountain's shadow, unaware of a troubled artist's musings and the extraordinary depiction his brush is making of their ordinary lives.
