Norwegian-born, naturalised-citizen Oskar J.W. Hansen's principal work at the Hoover Dam is the monument of dedication on the Nevada side. The twin Winged Figures of the Republic flank a 142' flag pole. Each 30' statue rests on a 6' base of gleaming igneous black diorite, and contains more than 4 tons of statuary bronze. In the words of the famed sculptor, the statues express "the immutable calm of intellectual resolution, and the enormous power of trained physical strength, equally enthroned in placid triumph of scientific accomplishment". 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Hoover Dam is a National Historic Landmark & one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders.
