These postcards are from 1925 and 1939. Starved Rock State Park's history is steeped in Native American legend and European settlement. The park's name comes from a legend about a battle between the Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes and the Illinois Indians, where the Illinois are said to have died of starvation on a sandstone butte. In the 17th century, the French established Fort St. Louis at the site, and it was later a centre for French trade and influence. The state park was officially established in 1911.
