Van Gogh created many self-portraits during his lifetime, he was a prolific self-portraitist, who painted himself thirty-seven times between 1886 and 1889. In all of these self-portraits one is struck that the gaze of the painter is seldom directed at us; even when it is fixed he seems to look elsewhere. These paintings vary in intensity and color, some portray the artist with a beard, some beardless, some with bandages; representing the episode in which he severed one of his ears. About the artist: Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Post Impressionist painter whose work was most notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty, and bold color.
