Maru ni Ue no Ji Luggage Tag

【Maru ni Jo no Ji】Crest / The design is based on "Heian Monkan" and "Mon Den". / The character "上" (Ue/Jo) was chosen for its heraldic significance, representing upward and progressive development. However, considering that many families who used this crest had "上" in their surname, it can be said that this crest not only has an auspicious significance but also a phonetic significance. (from "Nihon Monshogaku" by N. Numata) / Phonetic significance refers to crests that are mainly based on surnames, where the shape of the crest indicates the family name. (ibid., p.45) / "Ue no Ji" is a family crest that represents the auspicious significance of being superior and the phonetic significance of having "上" in one's surname. (from "Kamon no Jiten" by T. Takazawa) / It is also called "Agejo" as opposed to "Sagejo".
