Employment worked differently in the past. You would leave high school, and get a job. Then worked there until you died. You can see that dynamic here, very young faces, and people pretty close to the grave. There was no privacy. No cubical walls to give you the illusion of privacy. Desks were spaced close together. But notice there are no phones, but there are computers, they only did one thing though, and they were very slow and very noisy. Imagine how this office sounded like in the past, grinding of gears, clacking of buttons. The sound of chairs on a wooden floor rolling. Creaking boards from a loose nail. But no ringing of phones, yet if you listen carefully, you can almost hear people say... just 20 more years till I retire. Remember Charlie your doing it for the pension. If I work hard enough I may just get that 4 cent raise.
