Cats have been domesticating humans since Neolithic times. The cat is the second most popular pet in the world, after freshwater fish. Isn't that ironic. In Ancient Egypt, prayers and offerings were given to the cat goddess Bastet. The earliest historical evidence of cats as Egyptian deities comes from around 3100 BC. In Egyptian myth, a cat sits in judgment of the newly deceased. In many cultures, cats are considered to travel between the realms of the living and dead. In the past and today, cats are linked to spirit magic and are often associated with witches and shamans in the form of familiars or spirit helpers. Cats are also linked to the magic numbers three and seven. In Japanese culture, the Money Cat is considered lucky, potentially bringing wealth and prosperity. In ancient Rome, cats wandered freely around some temples. Even domesticated cats retain strong connections to their feral roots and a sense of mystique.
