African American Soldiers in World War 1 Poster

Titled These Truly are the Brave, this poster commemorates both the centennial of America's entry into World War One and the contibutions made to the effort by African American soldiers. The poster features the image of Sergeant Edwin Mosely Thompson who served with the 25th United States Infantry (Buffalo Soldiers) in Hawaii before the war and then volunteered for service on the Western Front after the declaration of war against Imperial Germany and the Central Powers. The image of Thompson was taken of Thompson at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii about 1916. His evocative portrait is set amidst the relics of war - rusted barbed war, spent cartridge cases and medals including the U.S. World War One Victory Medal and the French Croix de Guerre which was awarded by France for valor on the battlefield and earned by many African American service men during the conflict. This poster makes a perfect companion piece to the Touched by Fire poster also offered here which commemorates the African American military contributions to the Union cause during the American Civil War. The poster is perfect for classrooms of all ages and is ideal when celebrating Black History Month. The poster was originally created as part of a museum exhibit curated by solidersofthequeen.com which unfortunately never came to fruition but is offered here and a trubute to the soldiers of color who have proudly served their nation in the face of great opposition from many of their fellow countrymen.
