The "I Love You" sign in one combined motion is the first sign everyone should learn - it's the heart of communication - "I love you and I want to tell you." The pinky finger by itself is the letter "I" as it is used in the American Sign Language Manual Alphabet. The index finger and the thumb make the fingerspelled letter "L". As I've taught deaf children over the years from Texas to Georgia, nothing warms my heart more than catching the smile of one of my students as he or she flashes the "I LOVE YOU" sign on the way down the hall or as the final salute of the day while getting on the school bus.
