It is a member of the Thorny catfishes family and is native to the Paraná River basin in South America. It is a bottom dweller and will feed on aquatic insects, mollusks and aquatic plant matter. It prefers soft, sandy bottoms, plenty of hiding spots (like wood), and moderate water flow. It can reach a maximum length of 50 cm (19.7 inches).
