About This Design

Athena’s owl tetradrachm (Engravers Font) Postcard

Athena was the patron of Athens and goddess of wisdom, warfare, the arts, craftsmanship, and heroes (among others). Though there were many well-known depictions of this goddess and her symbols, perhaps she was most widely alluded to through the silver coinage of Athens. This design is based on the silver tetradrachm featuring Athena’s owl (Athene noctua), an olive branch, a crescent moon, and Athena’s name on the reverse. This design was virtually unchanged for 300 years after the early 5th century B.C.E. when a major silver vein was discovered in the silver mines of Laurium. This image of the owl has spread widely across the globe and has come to represent wisdom and knowledge in the Western world. Designs are fully customisable.
