These small, dark geese may have the longest migration route of any water fowl, travelling up to 7000 miles (Arctic to Carolinas). Many overwinter in New Jersey and New York. They mate for life unless one dies. Eel grass was their main food, but when the eel grass had a terrible die-off, they adapted and will now eat sea lettuce and other seaweed in addition to eel grass - this adaptation saved them. They can drink salt water, and are rarely found in fresh water.
