Innsbruck is located on the Inn river, which is also called the "bridge over the Inn". The Romans already appreciated the favorable traffic situation with the possibility of crossing the Alps. Today, Innsbruck is the fifth largest city in Austria with a population of about 130,000. Innsbruck is centrally located in the Tyrolean Inn Valley, where the Wipptal turns south towards the Brennerpass, and accordingly also at the intersection of Inn and Sill. A few kilometers west of Innsbruck the mouth of the Melach in the Inn between the villages Unterperfuss and Kematen in Tyrol represents the dividing line between the western Oberinntal and the eastern Unterinntal valley. The city is bordered to the north by the north chain, the southernmost of the four large mountain ranges in the Karwendel, and to the south by the Alpine central chain (Patscherkofel).
