In April of 1861, David Birney raised the 23rd Pennsylvania Regiment, mostly at his own expense. These colourful Zouaves (red baggy trousers, fez's and short blue jacket) were modelled after French Algerian soldiers and were popular at the time. This quality mug displays a recruitment poster for Birney's regiment.
