Bittersweet nightshade (Solanum dulcamara) originally was brought here from Europe and is now well established and still spreading throughout America. Although this woody vine is not the “deadly” nightshade (Belladonna), it is toxic and can be invasive if not controlled. Although poisonings are not frequent, this plant can be deadly, especially to children who pick and eat the red berries. Nightshades are a member of the potato family.
