The black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is a friendly, intelligent bird who can quickly learn to eat sunflower seeds from your hand, if you have a bit of patience. Among the most intelligent of the small songbirds, the chickadee often travels in groups of diverse birds such as blue jays, nuthatches and woodpeckers. Like squirrels and blue jays, chickadees are industrious hoarders. They have a good memory for their food stashes. Chickadees eat seeds and insects. They explore old dead trees to find food. They also like to nest in dead trees and are not partial to birdhouses. They will nest in a round house if you put sawdust into it first - that way the bird feels it is adapting a hollow log by removing the sawdust. Chickadees have over thirty distinct calls, the most obvious being the "chick-a-dee-dee" danger call. Chickadees are fascinating birds. They can lower their body temperature almost to death to survive cold harsh winter nights. The black capped chickadee is native to North America. These are friendly and expressive little birds!
