Bonaparte in Jaffa Poster

Bonaparte in Jaffa Poster

Napoleon Bonaparte in Jaffa - By Antoine-Jean Gros Napoleon's visit to the plague ward in Jaffa in 1799 is a noteable episode that took place during the Egyptian campaign of the French Revolutionary Wars. As Napoleon's forces advanced through the Middle East, they encountered an outbreak of bubonic plague in the city of Jaffa (modern-day Tel Aviv, Israel). Facing the challenge of maintaining morale among his troops while dealing with the spread of the deadly disease, Napoleon made a strategic decision to personally visit the plague-stricken soldiers in the military hospital. This visit, depicted famously in the painting "Bonaparte Visiting the Plague Victims of Jaffa" by Antoine-Jean Gros, served both military and propaganda purposes. During his visit, Napoleon displayed an act of apparent compassion by touching and comforting infected soldiers, a gesture intended to boost the morale of his troops and project an image of leadership and fearlessness. The scene, as depicted by Gros, presents Napoleon as a heroic and empathetic figure. However, historians debate the authenticity of this portrayal, as some argue that Napoleon's visit had a dual motive of using the opportunity to convince his soldiers that the plague was not as deadly as they believed, and therefore, they should not be deterred in their campaign. Regardless of the interpretation, the visit to the plague ward in Jaffa became a symbol in both contemporary and historical accounts, illustrating the challenges of military leadership in the face of disease and the complex intersection of political strategy and humanitarian concerns in Napoleon's military campaigns.

I like the design features on the website. They enable the fitting of a good quality Print to an existing frame. This Print was of excellent quality. I would buy again. One small gripe is that the image was not centred horizontally (about 3mm out) so needed trimming. No great hardship and may have been my fault in the setting-up. Next time, I would choose to set the text below the picture to a smaller font. Overall - Thank You! Looks good in its frame - Just as expected. I had a very expensive Gallery print of this before. It got damaged - hence the replacement. It compares very well.
