    Fatherless boys gravitated to the pool halls of early America. My single mother railed against my time 'misspent' in a pool hall. Then, a few times a week I pulled wadded dollars and coins from my front pockets and laid them on the table before her. She quit complaining and used it to purchase her cigarettes and food for our small family. Based upon a photograph by Lewis Hine.
