The family crest in the shape of a bridle is called kutsuwamon. The bridle, also called kutsuba or kutsuwami, is a tool placed in a horse's mouth, originating from a muzzle. Typically, it features a cross within a ring, known as a cross-shaped bridle... There are two types of bridle crests: the hanging bridle and the cross-shaped bridle. Some of these cross-shaped bridles originally represented not a bridle but a cross. However, during the Tokugawa period, when Christianity was strictly banned, many were altered to resemble bridles to avoid suspicion (from "Japanese Heraldry" by Noda Ryosuke).
