There are ten native species of maple (Acer) in Canada, including the sugar maple, red maple, manitoba maple and silver maple, and three or four introduced species. According to official tree people, the red maple is the most abundant tree in eastern North America. All maples produce some sort of sap, but the sugar maple is the source of most of the sap used to make sweet delicious maple syrup. The maple leaf was a symbol of French and English Canada in the middle of the nineteenth century, and over a hundred years later the red stylised leaf became the main element of the flag of Canada.
