BUKVAR' - Primer of Karion Istomin Poster

Created for the Tsar's children in Moscow in 1694, the "Primer of Karion Istomin" uses both text and images as emblems in its presentation of the letters of the Old Church Slavonic alphabet. The text was written by Karion Istomin (1648-1717) and the images are from engravings by Leontii Bunin. The images reproduced here are from facsimiles of the original (archived in the National Public Library of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin in St. Petersburg) which were published in 1981 under the title "Bukvar' Kariona Istomina" by the Leningrad publisher Avrora.
