Butter Clam Seashell, Unalaska Island Postcard
Butter clams were an important part of the diet of the Unangan people who are native to the Aleutian Islands and who had several villages on Unalaska Island. Middens have been found where thousands of the clams had been harvested and their shells left in the area after the animal had been consumed. Butter clams are very plain, with a cream coloured shell that has a pinkish beige tinge. The clams can grow to very large sizes with shells that sometimes measure over seven inches at the widest diameter. The clams are also an important part of the diet of the sea otters which live in the Aleutians.
