Cactus Blossoms Calendar

One evening in May, a ~4ft-high Baja cactus, hosting seven giant blossoms, began its 24-hour cycle to renew life. The blossoms began to open just after sunset, and when I arose the next morning, I found them dressed in raindrops from a pre-dawn shower. From dawn til dusk, the flowers seemed to grow more vibrant (probably actually a reflection of ambient light). Squadrons of pollen-laden bees came by to assist the plant's life cycle, thus assuring a reprise of this event, somewhere, sometime in the future. A late afternoon desert squall tattered the petals and remaining pollen, and sunset saw them close once and for all.
