Candy canes are traditional Christmas sweets, usually peppermint flavoued. The origin of these hard candy sticks goes back to German folklore. In the 17th century, the choirmaster of the church in Cologne asked a local candy maker to create some sweet sticks for children, to keep them from fidgeting during Christmas Eve service. The candy sticks were given hooks at the end, to resemble shepherds' crooks and thus connect them to the nativity scene. The white part of the candy was said to represent the purity of the baby Jesus. This story may or may not be true, as it can't be verified. The first recorded association of candy canes and Christmas was in 1874, about the time these sweet delights were known to be hung on Christmas trees.
