Candy canes are traditional Christmas sweets, originating in German folklore and first recorded as being associated with Christmas in 1874. According to legend they were first made to keep children quiet during the Christmas Eve service at the church in Cologne, in the 1600s. The candy sticks were created with a hook to resemble a shepherd's crook or staff, and were thus related to the nativity scene. No one really knows if this is true, as it's been passed on by word of mouth; but, candy canes have been an enduring part of Christmas for many generations.
