Cat at Night in the Old Neighbourhood Postcard

The cat sits on the landing at the top of the stairs and looks at the activity in the night. I took this picture on a balmy night in April. I was intrigued by the shadows and light, the patterns of the railing, siding and a streetlamp pole, the organic form of the cat (Rajah, a brown tabby Maine Coon mix) in a backdrop of golden light from the street lamp. This night photo looks like a painting but I did not do much post-processing here, just some colour boost. I’m quite fascinated by the painterly effects you can get using the camera at night (no flash). Some night photos like this remind me of post-impressionistic brushstrokes, not surprising since cutting edge artists of the 1800s were pioneers in the art of painting the effects of light – imagine what they would have done with a camera!
