Catholic Art Holy Card | Saint Ethelwold

Catholic Art Holy Card | Saint Ethelwold of Winchester Traditional Catholic Sacred Art Saint Portrait Holy Card—Saint Ethelwold of Winchester | Bishop and Father of Monks ✝✝✝ Honour the witness of Saint Ethelwold of Winchester with this 5×7 sacred art holy card, depicting the tenth-century bishop, teacher, and monastic reformer remembered as one of the principal figures in the renewal of Benedictine life in Anglo-Saxon England. Born at Winchester in the early tenth century, Æthelwold—known more widely as Ethelwold—served for a time in the household of King Æthelstan before entering religious life. He was ordained priest by Bishop Ælfheah the Bald and later joined Saint Dunstan at Glastonbury. Around 954 or 955, King Eadred appointed Ethelwold abbot of the neglected monastery of Abingdon. There he rebuilt the monastery and established a disciplined Benedictine community. In 963, he was consecrated Bishop of Winchester by Saint Dunstan. As bishop, Ethelwold worked vigorously for the renewal of monastic life. He introduced monks from Abingdon into the Old Minster at Winchester and supported the restoration or refoundation of ancient religious houses including Ely, Peterborough, and Thorney. Around 970, he translated the Rule of Saint Benedict into Old English and became a principal figure in the preparation of the Regularis Concordia, which sought a common observance for the monasteries and nunneries of England. Saint Ethelwold died on 1 August 984. His cult developed soon afterwards, and later generations remembered him by the Old English title muneca fæder—“father of monks.” ✝✝✝ Rendered in a reverent and historically grounded style, Saint Ethelwold is shown as a late Anglo-Saxon bishop in restrained episcopal dress, with the Roman tonsure and simple crozier appropriate to his age. His portrait reflects disciplined service, pastoral authority, monastic simplicity, and the patient labour of rebuilding what had fallen into neglect. ✝✝✝ This card is suitable for those seeking the intercession of Saint Ethelwold for faithfulness in the work entrusted to them, steadiness in the service of Christ, the renewal of prayer and Christian life, and gratitude for those who have handed the faith on before us. ✝✝✝ The reverse features Psalm 26:8 (RSVCE)—the Scripture chosen to reflect Ethelwold’s lifelong labour for the house of God: “O Lord, I love the habitation of thy house, and the place where thy glory dwells.” ✝✝✝ Recommended Format Size: 5″ × 7″ Paper: Signature Matte or Double-Thick Eggshell Print: High-Definition ✝✝✝ At Faith and Verse, we offer sacred art rooted in Christian tradition—without modern clutter, slogans, or artificial gloss. Each piece is created in reverence, grounded in history, silence, and devotion. ✝✝✝ Learn more about Saint Ethelwold and watch our Scripture and Prayer in His Honour: https://www.faithandverse.art/witnesses/saint-ethelwold ✝✝✝ Glory to God in the highest!
