He introduced monks from Abingdon into the Old Minster at Winchester and supported the restoration or refoundation of ancient religious houses including Ely, Peterborough, and Thorney. Around 970, he translated the Rule of Saint Benedict into Old English and became a principal figure in the preparation of the Regularis Concordia, which sought a common observance for the monasteries and nunneries of England. Saint Ethelwold died on 1 August 984.
