The five points of the pentagram represent the five elements. In this pentagram the top centre point of the pentagram represents spirit, the upper right represents earth, the lower right represents fire, the lower left represents water and the upper left represents air. Because spirit is in the most prominent position in this configuration it means that the focus is on spiritual energy rather than the material world. The physical, or material world is represented by the other elements and the pentagram in the centre that is inevitably pointing down when the outer is pointed up reminding us that we are beings with both spiritual and physical aspects. We may focus our attention on the spiritual aspect of our being but as long as we have a physical incarnation we must be cognizant of the material world even if the energy of that aspect of our being is in the latent position as shown in this pentagram. The time to meditate on this pentagram is when we want to transcend the stresses and demands of the material world and return to the peace and harmony of our spiritual self. Just as the point of the pentagram representing spirit rises above the others we can see ourselves rising above the entanglements of material reality until we find that place of peace within us that is the gateway to spirit. There we can restore our sense of self and rejuvenate our spiritual energy so that we may return to the material world balanced and revitalised.
