Although it is noted that the tradition of The Tree began in 1933, the unofficial tradition reportedly started during the Depression era when construction workers, working on Rockerfeller Plaza decorated a smaller ( about 20 feet) balsam fir tree with strings of cranberries- paper garlands and a few tin cans on Christmas eve 1931
